During this event, young people, entrepreneurs, and specialists gathered to address challenges related to gender equity, diversity in sexual orientation, ethnic and cultural backgrounds in Latin America and the Caribbean. Jenny had the opportunity to share her perspective and reflections on the #STEM sector and the importance of closing gender gaps in this industry. Here are her reflections during her intervention: Low Female Economic Participation: Women’s economic participation is limited and unfortunately has worsened since the pandemic. In STEM, access is even more restrictive. Why does this gap matter? Not only for justice and equity but fundamentally because the inclusion of all sectors of society is a boost to economic growth, which is staggered and the ability to innovate, where Chile has regressed in recent years. Gender Gap in Key Positions: In crucial fields such as #AI, barely a fifth of positions are occupied by women. Inequalities are deeply rooted in the STEM industry. The causes? A mix of stereotypes, expectations, and a lack of programs that bring women closer to scientific fields. Prejudices in Education: A study conducted in Chile indicates that girls are often discouraged in scientific subjects and face professional expectations that steer them towards humanities and social assistance fields. How do we change the paradigm in a comprehensive way? We must not forget that the majority of teachers are women. Threats of Labor Transformation: The transformation of employment in the technological age could disproportionately affect women, as acquiring the necessary skills could be problematic. Inclusive Training Programs: To close the gender gap in STEM, it is essential to implement programs that allow women to participate on an equal footing and develop their careers in technological fields, starting from childhood. Competitiveness and Growth: The inclusion of women in STEM is not only a matter of justice and equity but also essential to boost competitiveness and economic growth in our region. Diverse perspectives enrich innovation and decision-making. Mois Navon is a Jewish American engineer who went to Jerusalem to fulfill his dream of working in the Israeli innovative ecosystem. Founder of Mobileye – the startup that bought the automotive visual system that fueled the autonomous vehicle revolution – rose to fame in 2017 by selling the chip he developed to Intel for $15 billion, the largest high-tech sale in the Israeli history. Today, the sophisticated ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistant System) is found in 140 million vehicles and dominates 70% of the market. His first taste of technological development came while he was finishing his studies at UCLA, United States, working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he helped create an innovative processor tube to detect cancer cells. Subsequently, he began a computerized simulator for the US Strategic Defense Initiative’s Star Wars anti-missile program. While at IBM, they developed high-tech products, including smart displays for commercial airlines, algorithmic chips for pay TV, and fiber optic chip networks. Throughout this process, Navon developed a strong connection with Jewish spirituality. After the sale of Mobileye he decided to become a rabbi. He is currently finishing his PhD at Bar Ilan University’s Department of Jewish Philosophy, where his thesis deals with applying Jewish philosophy to address ethical questions in the field of artificial intelligence. «I am an engineer by profession and a rabbi by passion,» he has said repeatedly in talks he gives around the world. Its central themes are the future of cities, the ethical dilemmas of AI, autonomous cars and robots. His talk «Innovation, Autonomous Cars and Purpose», in which he narrates his life path, has filled stages around the world. [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

International experts debate the effectiveness of vaccines for COVID and its mutations

In the context that we face today worldwide with the mutations of COVID-19, the University of Tel Aviv (TAU) and Softpower Connection, its representative for Chile, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, held the webinar “Covid -18 vaccine and mutations. Who will win the race? In the activity, carried out virtually, presented by Dr. Ella Sklan, from the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, Sacker School of Medicine and Dr. Adi Stern from the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research & amp; Edmond J. Safra of the Center for Bioinformatics. Both full professors of the TAU. Dr. Ella Sklan made an analysis of the different types of vaccines used in recent years, from hepatisis A and B, through influenza, polio and Ebola, to show the difference and composition of the Sars Covid vaccine- 19. He finalized the characteristics of the vaccines that are currently being administered and their effect on the respiratory system. For her part, Dr. Adi Stern referred to mutations. He analyzed the two best-known Spike 501 mutations present in the United Kingdom and in African strains, considered the most transmissible, although not necessarily the most virulent in relation to deaths of infected people. He also analyzed the peak mutation 484, present in South Africa, Brazil, and in Japanese strains, a variant that caused Great Britain to close its borders for all the countries of South America and Portugal. He said this could allow the antibodies to escape, but the good news, he said, is that «a two-dose vaccine is very likely to protect against both mutations.» “This is the global debate and we want to bring it closer to Chile. Today the contagion curve continues to grow exponentially and we have more than 15 people infected with the British strain. While the vaccination processes for older adults begin next week, we must prepare and anticipate the upcoming challenges. For this reason, for us at SPC it is key to transmit these conversations and share the experiences of Israel, a country that has characteristics very similar to those of Chile and whose experience to date has been very positive, ”says Jennyfer. Salvo, CEO of Sotfpower Connections. Israel occupies the first place in the list of countries that have already managed to supply more doses to their citizens and in first place if the percentage of the inoculated population is taken into account. So far, it should be noted that in less than three weeks 20% of the inhabitants of that country have already received the first dose of the vaccine, that is, more than two million people (ourworldindata.org). Considered one of the most innovative countries in the world, Israel is the world’s second largest innovation ecosystem, third in knowledge and technology productivity, and fifth in business sophistication. It has the largest venture capital industry per capita, invests 4.7% of its GDP ($ 247.9 billion) in R&D, and generates more than 1000 technology Start-Ups per year. For its part, Tel Aviv University is the eighth in the world in innovation and entrepreneurship, the only non-North American university that ranks in the top 15 for MBA programs and has the highest number of founding unicorns per capita.
